More Job Openings, But Job Hunters Don't Have Skills Needed The U.S. Department of Labor recently reported a gain in job openings to 3.4 million at the end of December and a decrease in the unemployment rate to 8.3%. Jobless Claims Rise, But Trend Shows Improvement Jobless claims climbed by 21,000 to a seasonally adjusted 377,000 in the week ended Jan. 21, the U.S. Labor Department reports.
